About interpreting

The three main types of interpreting are:

simultaneous interpreters Simultaneous – usually used for conferences or seminars. A sound booth for the interpreters is set up in the room, and the participants requiring interpreting services will wear headsets. The interpreters listen to the speaker and almost simultaneously translate the message into the target language for the participants. This way, the other participants who don’t require the services are not disturbed, nor is the speaker distracted.

consecutive interpreters Consecutive – usually used for presentations or training sessions. For this type of interpreting there is no sound booth and the interpreter stands next to the speaker. The speaker speaks, during which the interpreter makes notes, and after a few minutes, at an appropriate pause, the interpreter translates the message for the participants. All participants can hear the translation, whether they need to or not. Note that this type of interpreting takes up a lot of time and will double the timeframe of your meeting or training session.

liaison interpreters Liaison – usually used for visiting business partners or potential investors. The interpreter basically acts as a communication facilitator between the parties. Often, the interpreter will accompany the client to the airport to greet the arrivals and help them settle in. Then, over the course of a few days, the interpreter accompanies the parties and helps get messages across to either party.

A few things to remember:
For simultaneous interpreting of over 30 minutes, you absolutely need two interpreters. Simultaneous interpreting is a very demanding skill and requires that the interpreters rest for 20 to 30 minutes after every 30 minutes of interpreting.

Interpreters are hired by the day, not the hour. The reason for this is that interpreters cannot schedule another project on the same day as yours, therefore they lose a day's wages. Some interpreters may agree to hourly or half-day work, but you run the risk of losing them at the last minute if they are offered a full day's work on the same day as your project.

If there are no interpreters available in the city where your event will be held, we will need to bring some in from another city. We do everything we can to contact those closest to your city. However, if we can't, additional costs for travel, accommodations, meals, and incidentals will be charged back to you.
